Safer Beauty: My Top 8 Picks

For a while, I stopped wearing makeup. I was on the GAPS diet and that made me extremely aware of what you put onto your skin. I started to look into safer beauty companies that were rated lower on the EWG skindeep database, but it was hard to find a company that was consistent or had low enough ratings for me.

This year I have partnered with a safer beauty company. It took me a while to settle on a company I really trusted. It is easy to get fooled by marketing out there with words such as “organic”, “all natural”, “non-toxic”, “plant-based”, “plant-derived”, “anti-inflammatory” or so many others.

Finding a Company I Trust

I researched a number of companies and even joined some of them as a consultant or an affiliate in the past, but the one company I really trust is Beautycounter. At first, I had a hard time being okay with their products because they were not completely all natural.

Having been on the GAPS diet in the past, it is advised to never put anything on your skin you wouldn’t eat. That doesn’t leave you with a lot of options if you want to put makeup on your face or apply more than just oil to your skin in order to prevent premature aging.

Why I Changed My Routine

For a while, that is what I was doing – just applying jojoba oil to my face or a similar oil. I started to notice my skin was aging faster than I liked, so I started to look for a company that made skincare that prioritized safer beauty and that could help my skin look younger.

Concerns With All-Natural Products

I learned that even all-natural products have concerns. The first concern is preventing mold in the product, especially products that are water-based. Preservatives must be used in order to prevent mold from developing. Some companies that carry all-natural products use essential oils as a preservative, which sounds great. However, the amount of essential oils needed to preserve some skincare or makeup is not safe to apply to the skin. So either the company is using a safe dilution and the product is vulnerable to mold or the company is not using a safe dilution of oil to essential oils.

Learning this about essential oils as a preservative in commercial products made me question all-natural products. What really gave me reassurance with Beautycounter is discovering that all their ingredients they use in their products have been tested for safety.

Below are the five ways that Beautycounter defines clean beauty:

Ban Intentionally

The Never List™ is made up of approximately 1,500 harmful or questionable ingredients we prohibit from our product formulations, including the nearly 1,400 ingredients banned in the European Union.

Screen Rigorously

Using the best available sources, we screen every potential ingredient for information on specific hazards like cancer, developmental toxicity, hormone disruption, and infertility.

Learn Constantly

There are major data gaps on most cosmetics ingredients, so we review emerging data regularly and even commission our own studies.

Source Responsibly

We choose the best organic, natural, sustainable, and synthetic ingredients that meet our standards. Over 80% of the ingredients in our products are natural or plant-derived.

Share Transparently

Every formula ingredient, including known components of fragrances, flavors, and intentionally added preservatives, are listed on our product labels or on Beautycounter.com.

I am going to share with you some of my favorite products. I truly believe and can stand by their mission.

Safer Beauty with Beautycounter

Beautycounter’s mission is to get safer products into the hands of everyone. This is something I love because so many people I care about are using toxic products they put on their skin. They are creating so much awareness about using safer ingredients. Safer beauty is very important to me and Beautycounter is inspiring companies to change to safer ingredients and consumers to be aware of what they are applying to their skin.

My Favorites:

Brightening + Vitamin C Facial Oil

Face Oil No. 1

This oil is a best seller and offers great moisture to your skin. You can add it to your moisturizer for extra hydration. It is composed of different plant oils and smells amazing!

Charcoal Bar

Charcoal Cleansing Bar

This bar draws out impurities from your face, much like taking charcoal internally does in your body (it binds to toxins). It is great at cleansing your face and body and treating acne.

Mascara

Lengthening Mascara

This is one of the best non-toxic mascaras I have ever used. It doesn’t clump and the ingredients are much cleaner than other mainstream brands. They designed the wand specifically for this.

Baby Balm and Baby Oil

Baby Soothing Oil

The balm and the baby oil are one of my favorite safer beauty products. They are incredibly soft, nourishing and not just for babies! I do love using both on my daughter. Now that she is old enough, she brings the oil to me to put on her after a bath!

Shampoo and Conditioner

Daily Shampoo

The shampoo and conditioner are safe to use, unlike many mainstream brands. They perform well against toxic salon products too! I have tried a number of all-natural shampoos and conditioners and most left my hair frizzy. They leave my hair feeling clean and my scalp refreshed.

Rejuvenating Day Cream

Rejuvenating Day Cream

If you are looking for a serious anti-aging moisturizer, the rejuvenating day cream is the most targeted for keeping your skin looking younger. I love how light this moisturizer is on my skin, but it feels like it is working too.

Rejuvenating Eye Cream

Rejuvenating Eye Cream

The rejuvenating eye cream goes along with the rejuvenating day cream and is a great product to add to your daily regimen reduce the appearance of fine lines and puffiness. According to an independent, 8-week, 28-subject, single-blind clinical and consumer perception study, 89% of women reported under-eye puffiness was reduced and fine lines were diminished.

Nourishing Cleansing Balm

Nourishing Cleansing Balm

This balm is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. It is a really popular product among Beautycounter customers. Uses include a nourishing daily cleanser, a melting makeup-removing balm, and a deeply replenishing overnight mask. The balm is great for hydration with nutrient-rich raspberry and cranberry seed oils and helps to promote a brighter complexion with radiance-boosting vitamin C.
