Tallow Balm
Ever since my daughter was born, I have been very careful of what I put on her skin and
what I feed her
(I make all her baby food). I was using an oil and balm on her skin after baths that were 100% natural, but I was hearing that tallow was the best thing for the skin, so I wanted to give it a try on her.
After making a batch, I started using it on my daughter. As I was applying it to her, I realized it was moisturizing my hands very well. My hands never felt so soft! This was over the winter, so it felt like a relief being in the dry months.
Tallow Balm is a Great DIY Gift
I decided tallow balm would be great DIY Christmas gifts for family members. Everyone loved how their skin felt after using it, so I wanted to share the recipe with all of you as well. If you are on a tight budget, this is an excellent and affordable gift that your friends and family will appreciate.
For my daughter’s tallow balm, I did not use any essential oils. I know there are safe dilutions for babies, but I thought it was better to make her batch without any essential oils. Some people can have allergic reactions to essential oils and I did not want to take the chance with her.
Where to Buy
Where do you purchase tallow or beef fat? I am able to purchase beef fat to render into tallow from local farmers in my area. If you are unable to do this, Radiant Life sells grass fed beef tallow. Please do source pasture raised tallow because the quality of ingredients matters. I have videos here and here how to render lard, and you can use the same method to render tallow.
Benefits and Uses
In addition to tallow balm being great for the skin in general, it is also effective at getting rid of diaper rash. It is a relief to chapped skin and even chapped lips, especially in the winter time. I have even used it on sun burns in the past, and my skin tans quickly after applying it. One interesting thing to note is I have a problem with the skin on one of my fingers peeling (I am not certain, but it could be eczema on my finger). I am dealing with it homeopathically, but tallow balm is the only thing that seems to soothe my skin. It is also good and soothing for other rashes on the skin.
Tallow Balm

Ingredients
• ¾ cup grass fed tallow
• 4 tablespoons real olive oil - jojoba oil or avocado oil work fine too
• Lavender and/or frankincense essential oils - I used about 20 drops of each oil to make it smell great and not beefy (optional - I did not include in my baby's batch - you would need to reduce the ratio of essential oils to be safe for a baby)
Instructions
1. Melt tallow on low heat in a saucepan.
2. Pour into a mixing bowl once melted and mix with olive oil. The olive oil helps to soften the
mixture when it hardens again. If the mixture is cool enough and you are using essential oils,
mix them in at this time.
3. Wait until the mixture has hardened (only slightly).
4. Beat with a mixer until fluffy.
5. Store in glass containers.
